Amazon Settles FTC Identity Theft Records Case

Published June 30, 2026 · October 27, 2026 last updated

On June 30, 2026, the FTC announced that Amazon would pay $2.25 million in civil penalties to settle allegations that it violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act by refusing to provide transaction records to people whose information had been used by identity thieves.

Those records can help consumers identify fraudulent transactions and address the damage from identity theft. The FTC’s case alleged that Amazon failed to provide them to consumers who requested them. A settlement resolves the agency’s allegations; it is not a finding that every allegation was proven at trial.

If your information has been misused, document the fraudulent activity, review your credit reports, and use IdentityTheft.gov to build a recovery plan. Keep copies of requests and responses as you work to resolve the issue.
